When I moved into my new home, one of the first things I faced was my small living room. Initially, I thought it would be impossible to make it look bigger. But as I experimented, I realized that with a few smart decor hacks, any small space can be made larger and more beautiful.
In this blog, I’m sharing my personal experiences and what worked for me—and maybe for you too.
1. Paint your walls light – colors that enhance space

When I first saw my living room, the walls were dark brown and greenish. This made the room feel even smaller. I then chose lighter, more neutral colors—like off-white, beige, and light gray. These colors instantly made the room feel bright and open.
My advice:
- Pastel shades like mint green, light blue or cream look great for walls.
- If you want to get a little creative, decorate one wall with textured wallpaper, but keep the rest of the walls light.
2. The Magic of Mirrors – An Easy Way to Make a Space Look Double

I placed a large round mirror in front of my sofa, and believe me, it completely changed the vibe of my room. Mirrors reflect light, making the room feel larger and more open.
Tips that I followed:
- Place the mirror on a wall that receives natural light.
- If space is limited, place a full-length mirror against the wall.
- If you want, you can also make a wall stylish with decorative mirror frames.
3. Choose furniture wisely – less is better

At first, my room was so crowded that it was hard to even walk in. Then I learned that not every piece of furniture is necessary.
I just kept a few smart pieces —
- a small 2-seater sofa,
- A coffee table with storage
- And a light side chair.
Now the room not only has space but also comfort.
My learning:
Keeping fewer things keeps the room clutter-free and the mind feels relaxed.
4. Change both the mood and the size with lighting

Lighting not only provides light, but also determines the feel of a room. I used to have just one tube light in my room—which made it feel flat.
Then I installed warm lights—a floor lamp, some fairy lights, and a table lamp. Now, when evening comes, the whole room feels cozy and spacious.
My Lighting Hacks:
- Install corner lamps to make good use of the space.
- Ceiling lights and wall sconces are also great options.
- Always choose warm tone lights, this makes the atmosphere look soft.
5. Make walls appear taller with curtain height

This trick proved to be a game changer for me. Previously, my curtains were hung above the window. Then I moved the curtain rod closer to the ceiling and installed long, flowing curtains.
Now the walls appear higher and the room appears larger.
Tips:
- Choose light-colored curtains – like white, cream, or sky blue.
- Use cotton or linen curtains instead of heavy fabric.
- If you want, you can also add light and elegance to the room with sheer curtains.
6. Clear the clutter – clear space, clear mind

I used to keep a lot of small items in my living room—showpieces, rugs, cushions, and stands. This made the room feel small.
Now I’ve adopted a minimalist look—just a simple rug, a couple of cushions, and a few green plants.
In my experience:
Removing clutter not only makes a room look open but also makes you feel relaxed from within.
7. Keep the walls simple yet stylish
I used to hang a lot of frames on my walls, but I realized it made them look busy.
Now, I keep just two large frames—one for family photos and one for nature art. This creates both softness and balance in the room.
My suggestion:
- Choose large frames instead of many small ones.
- Leave some empty space on the wall so that the eyes get rest.
8. Plant trees – a feeling of freshness and positivity

The most beloved part of my living room is my plants. I have a money plant, a snake plant, and an areca palm. They add a natural touch to the room and also keep the air clean.
Small tip:
If you have limited space, try hanging plants or use wall pots.
My personal experience
Now, when I sit in my living room, it feels more open, relaxed, and positive than ever before. As the morning sun filters through the light curtains and hits the mirror, a happy energy fills the room.
Sometimes I sit there, drinking my coffee or reading a book—and think, a house doesn’t have to be big, it just needs to feel big.
Some extra tricks that worked for me
- Replace large printed carpets with solid color rugs.
- Keep furniture slightly away from the wall, this visually increases the space.
- Glass or transparent tables look very elegant.
- Remove unused items every few months.
- Decorate small corners with a décor shelf or plant stand.
If your living room is small, there’s no need to worry. With a little creativity and smart decor hacks, you can make even your small room feel spacious, beautiful, and comfortable.
I now realize that when we decorate our homes with love and thought, it returns an equal amount of positive energy. There
‘s a unique joy in having a big heart and big thoughts, even in a small space.
