Today, I’m going to tell you a story that might be yours. It’s my story—one of expensive products, unsightly breakouts, and ultimately, the triumph of simplicity .
When I was a teenager, my skincare routine was a jungle. Every new YouTube trend, every Instagram influencer’s glowing face drew me in. “Ten-Step Korean Skincare,” “Magical Serum for Overnight Transformation,” “The $500 Cleanser”—I tried everything. My bathroom became a mini-beauty store, and my face… a laboratory!
Chapter 1: The Great Skincare Experiment (and Its Failure)

I still remember the first time I used an acid-based toner. I’d heard it offered “micro-exfoliation.” I thought the “tingling sensation” meant the product was working, like some magical cleansing. In reality, my skin was burning and screaming from within. My oily skin constantly broke out in tiny pimples, and my forehead and cheeks were always red.
I changed over 15 products in a week. When one product didn’t work, I’d immediately apply another, without even considering that my skin wasn’t getting a chance to adjust to the new ingredients. The result? My skin’s natural barrier was completely damaged. My skin was now not only oily, but also dehydrated —meaning it produced plenty of oil, but felt stretched, dry, and lifeless underneath. It was a wake-up call. I decided: I had to stop, and start from the ground up.
Chapter 2: The Reset Button – Back to Basics

I eliminated almost everything from my skincare routine. I told myself, “Just three things. Just three. For a month.” It was a kind of ‘skin detox’ for me. I followed just these three steps for a month, and you won’t believe it, my skin started to calm down and the redness gradually subsided.
My new, simple philosophy was: Cleanse, Moisturize, and Protect .
1. Gentle Cleansing: Washing the skin with love

I realized that harsh soaps and face washes with strong chemicals were forcing my skin to produce more oil because they were completely stripping my skin of its natural oil (sebum).
- My experience: I chose a very mild, fragrance-free, sulfate-free cleanser. I simply applied it to my face for 30 seconds, gently massaged it in, and rinsed with lukewarm water. I completely said no to hot water, as it also dries out the skin.
- The simple solution: Simply wash your face with a calming cleanser, once in the morning and twice at night to remove makeup (first an oil-based cleanser, then a water-based cleanser). This is the foundation on which your healthy skin will be built.
2. Deep Moisturization: Moisture is life

My biggest mistake was thinking that oily skin didn’t need moisturizer. When you don’t apply moisturizer, your skin thinks it has to produce more oil to hydrate itself—it was a vicious cycle.
- My experience: I started using a lightweight (gel-based) moisturizer at night and an SPF moisturizer during the day. Within a few weeks, my excessive oil production decreased. My skin was no longer “afraid” of drying out, and its oil production returned to normal.
- The simple solution: Be sure to use a good moisturizer suited to your skin type (gel or lotion for oily skin, a richer cream for dry skin). Apply it to damp skin to lock in moisture.
3. Non-Negotiable Protection: SPF is my best friend

If there’s one thing I’ll always tell you to do, it’s wear sunscreen. I chose a mineral-based sunscreen that didn’t leave a white cast on my face and wasn’t sticky.
- My experience: Whether it was cloudy or sunny, indoors or outdoors—I applied a generous amount of SPF 30+ every morning and reapplied every two to three hours. The biggest benefit was that my old pimple marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) started to lighten because the sun’s harmful rays weren’t darkening them further.
- The simple solution: A good, broad-spectrum SPF protects your skin from aging, blemishes, and most importantly, cancer. Make it the “last and most important step” of your routine.
Chapter 3: Adding the ‘Magic’ (But Slowly and Wisely)
Once my skin felt completely calm and healthy with this simple routine, I slowly began incorporating some “active” ingredients into my routine. It was like dropping a pebble into a calm pond—gently, not like throwing a huge stone.
- Vitamin C Serum (Morning): I started applying a Vitamin C serum in the morning, before moisturizer. It gave my skin a wonderful radiance and, combined with sunscreen, provided excellent protection against oxidative stress.
- Niacinamide (Night): I incorporated Niacinamide (for reducing pore size and redness) into my nighttime routine three times a week.
- Retinol/Retinoids (twice a week): In addition, I started using a mild retinoid twice a week (for anti-aging and texture).
This was a real lesson for me in “less is more.” I incorporated only one active ingredient at a time and used it for at least a month to see if it was working. If my skin became red or started peeling, I would immediately stop using that product and go back to basics.
Chapter 4: Skincare is not just about products: My lifestyle mantra
I realized that applying products externally wasn’t enough. Our skin is the largest organ and reflects our inner health.
A. Gut Health and Skin Connection

I paid attention to my diet. Excessive processed sugar and dairy products often triggered my acne.
- My solution: I added probiotics (yogurt/buttermilk) and omega-3 fatty acids (nuts and seeds) to my diet. This not only improved my digestion but also reduced the inflammation and redness on my face.
B. Hydration and Sleep: Two of the best inexpensive serums

- Water: When I started drinking enough water daily (about 8-10 glasses), my skin started looking hydrated and plump from within.
- Sleep: 7-8 hours of sleep gives my skin time to repair itself and make new collagen. I make sure my face is completely clean before bed.
C. The Unseen Dirt
- Pillowcases: I change my pillowcases weekly. Dirt, sweat, and oil accumulate and transfer to the skin overnight, so using a silk or clean cotton pillowcase is a small, but important change.
- Phone cleaning: I sanitize my phone screen every day. Imagine how many times we put our phones to our cheeks throughout the day!
This journey was mine, and while the perfect product or ingredient may be different for you, the philosophy remains the same: listen to your skin. Don’t overload it. Give it love, and it will love you back.
